Last week at Maslow’s Community Hub, we had the pleasure of hosting a beautiful and inspiring Japanese calligraphy workshop led by artist and designer Kanae Park.
The workshop brought together members of our community for an afternoon of creativity, mindfulness, and cultural discovery. Participants had the opportunity to explore the elegant art of Japanese brush calligraphy, learning how simple strokes of ink can become expressive works of art.
Kanae, a Glasgow-based print artist originally from Japan, has been practising calligraphy since the age of five. During the workshop, she guided participants through the fundamentals of traditional brush calligraphy, sharing both techniques and the cultural meaning behind this centuries-old art form.
Participants learned how to:
- Use traditional Japanese brushes and ink
- Practice basic strokes and calligraphy techniques
- Write their own names in Japanese characters
- Slow down and experience the mindful, meditative nature of calligraphyFor many people, it was their first time holding a calligraphy brush, but Kanae’s warm and encouraging teaching style made the session welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Japanese calligraphy is not only about writing beautifully—it is also about focus, patience, and presence. Many attendees commented on how relaxing and satisfying the process felt.
By the end of the session, everyone had created their own calligraphy pieces to take home, each one unique and full of personality.
A big thank you to Kanae for sharing her knowledge, creativity, and passion with us, and to everyone who came along and made the workshop such a lovely event.
At Maslow’s Community Hub, we love creating opportunities for people to learn new skills, connect with others, and explore different cultures through creative activities like this.
Keep an eye on our timetable and social media for more upcoming workshops, classes, and community events.
We hope to see you at the Hub soon!
