This week marks 10 years of Maslow’s Community — and it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate how far the journey has come.
What began as a simple, practical idea has grown into a vibrant, volunteer-powered community space supporting thousands of people and families each year. Over the past decade, Maslow’s has developed step by step — guided by dignity, choice, respect, and kindness — into far more than a shop. Today, it is a place of welcome, connection, and belonging.
Where It All Began
Maslow’s started in 2016 with a straightforward but powerful goal from its founders — Carol, Steve, and Janette: to collect and share clothes and everyday essentials with people who needed them.
From the beginning, the focus was not just on providing items, but on how support is given. The vision centred on personal dignity — allowing people to choose what they need, feel respected, and be welcomed without judgment. That approach continues to define Maslow’s today.
What started as a small, volunteer-led effort quickly showed how much a community-based model of care and practical help was needed.
Milestones Along the Way
Over the past decade, several key moments have shaped Maslow’s growth and impact:
2016 — Maslow’s Shop opened in Govan
A volunteer-run space focused on dignified access to clothing and essentials.
2022 — Registered charity status
Maslow’s became a registered charity, strengthening its foundation and enabling further growth and partnerships.
2023 — Maslow’s Hub opened
A major step forward — expanding beyond essentials to create space for classes, advice sessions, group activities, and social connection.
2023 — SCVO Charity of the Year finalist
National recognition of the organisation’s impact and community-driven model.
2024 — Expansion and sustainability steps
The shop moved to a larger premises, the Electrical Shop launched, and online selling began — helping build long-term financial sustainability while increasing reach.
Each step built on the last, always with the same core purpose: practical support delivered with humanity.
Powered by Volunteers, Shaped by Experience
Maslow’s is powered by volunteers — including many people with lived experience of displacement, hardship, and rebuilding their lives. Volunteers are not only helpers but leaders, organisers, mentors, and community builders.
Through volunteering, people gain skills, confidence, friendships, and work experience — while helping others at the same time. This shared participation is one of Maslow’s greatest strengths and what gives the community its unique spirit.
More Than a Shop
Today, Maslow’s is more than a place to access essentials. It is:
a welcoming community hub
a space for learning and advice
a meeting point for cultures and stories
a platform for rebuilding confidence and independence
a network of mutual support
Every conversation, donation, volunteer shift, and act of kindness contributes to that environment.
