This week we held our first volunteers’ meeting of the year — and it was full of warmth, ideas, and genuine connection. Together, we reflected on Maslow’s current work, the challenges we’re facing, and how we can continue building a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone who walks through our doors.
At Maslow’s, volunteers are not only part of the day-to-day running of the shop and hub — they actively help shape our future. Through regular meetings, shared planning, and community events, volunteers have a real voice in how our space grows and develops.

More Than Volunteering — A Place to Grow
Volunteering at Maslow’s isn’t just about giving back — it’s also a powerful way to build skills, confidence, and direction for what comes next. It’s a space where people connect, learn, and support one another.
Our volunteers meet new friends, practise English, develop practical skills, and gain experience that strengthens their employability. For many, especially refugees and asylum seekers starting new lives in a new country, volunteering can be the first step into a local work environment and community network.
Training, Support, and Real Experience
Every new volunteer receives structured training and practical support so they can feel confident in their role from the start. There are many ways to get involved, including:
sorting and preparing donations
stocking shelves and organising displays
welcoming and assisting customers
helping with admin and hub activities
We aim to make sure everyone finds a place where they feel capable, valued, and part of something meaningful.
Growing Into Leadership
As volunteers gain experience, many choose to take on more responsibility. Some become shift leaders — helping organise the day, supporting new volunteers, and keeping things running smoothly. Watching people grow into leadership roles is one of the most rewarding parts of our work.
And while it’s always a little sad when volunteers move on, we celebrate it too. Seeing people step into jobs, education, and new opportunities is exactly what volunteering at Maslow’s is meant to support. We’re proud to be a small part of that journey.
Thank You — and Welcome
A big welcome to all our new volunteers, and a heartfelt thank you to our long-term volunteers — including those who recently received certificates in recognition of their contribution. Maslow’s is what it is because of you.
Community is built by people, and our volunteers are at the heart of it every day. 💛
